  1. "The Medici family, also known as the House of Medici, first attained wealth and political power in Florence in the 13th century through its success in commerce and banking." The Medici's were the most influential family in Florence. During a dynasty lasting almost three centuries, the Medici's produced four popes and have spread their genes so that many of Europe's royal families have Medici blood in their veins. The Medici family were huge patrons of the arts supporting the works of famous artists such as Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo. Without the Medici's support, these Renaissance masters might not have succeeded or become as successful as they are. The grand duke Ferdinand made a influence on the arts as "he founded the Villa Medici at Rome and brought many priceless works of art to Florence." Also, when the Medici line started to decline, they established a more authoritarian rule which produced stability in Florence and Tuscany.
